I have a laptop that is stock and it currently has 1x 4gb DDR3 800mhz ram stick in it. I want to upgrade to 8gb total ram. So I want to add another 4gb ram, but I don't know if the new ram also needs to be 800mhz or will the 1333 or 1600 MHz work? I know not to mix sizes, but I am unsure about the speed. I am lost here~~

UPDATE: I am upgrading a Lenovo E545. I am running windows 7 pro. So my system is capable of 16gb total ram, I double checked that with Lenovo also, and they said that the system does support 16gb, but I can't find anything about the speed. I ran the crucial check and they how me results and all of their suggestions are 4gb DDR3 1600 MHz. I just wanted to know do I need to buy two of them so they match, or could I use one 800 MHz (the factory one) with 1 that is 4gb 1600mhz aftermarket?

Solution
First, you need to know the max RAM that your system can utilize and the speed. This depends on the OS version (32 bit vs. 64 bit) and the mobo you are using. The OS will determine the total amount of RAM and the Mobo will tell you the max speed. If you have your user manual it will tell you. Without knowing what you are using I can't tell you either. But once you determine this, all you need to do is purchase the new, compatible RAM, remove the old, and replace with the new. Once this is done make sure your systems registers the new RAM by checking for it in your BIOS. The article link below shows an apple laptop but the process is basically the same.
