I want the fastest single core performance to play ARMA III. Which CPU?

Hi,

I currently run an i7 920 @ 3.6Ghz on an Asus RAMPAGE II EXTREME, and am looking at upgrading. I'm after the fancy new (very expensive) Asus Rampage V Extreme Intel X99 motherboard and was looking at the Intel Core i7-4790K 4.00GHz (4.4GHz on turbo). But I read that even though it is a 'K' version it does not overclock very much at all.

The game ARMA III needs a good GPU (I have a Sapphire R9 290 [tri-x]) but it is also a pig of a game that needs a single fast thread.

Is there a CPU where I can pretty much guarantee 5GHz?

I will of course be water cooling and do not think I need more than 4 cores.

Any experiences/suggestions/ thoughts/advice/warnings/comments etc are welcome.

stop looking at the speeds. speeds arent as important as they were at one time.
the intel chips work better than you would think if you are focused on speed alone. the i5 4690 is more than enough for arma 3 even with the sub 4ghz speeds.

although it is CPU intensive, and horribly optimized, you do not need 5ghz to run this game. the 4790k will run it fine with stock settings, but so will the i5.
the 4790k has many successful reports of getting a stable 4.8 ghz in the overclock portion of the website, but is not necessary. i have this processor, and run this game fine on stock CPU speeds

Thank you for setting me straight on the compatibility of the CPU and motherboard. I have just seen the new 6/8 core cpu's that use the x99 motherboards have much slower cores so they are out of the question.

Can you recommend a good motherboard for the i7 4790K please? I needs to have great sound and at least 10x SATA 3 connectors and USB 3 (at least 4),. Would it be possible to get one that supports those new M.2 SSD's because I want fastest boot time possible and fastest start time for Eve-Online (incase of being in middle of fight and the program CTD) and also a quick start for BF4 and the best frame rate I can get on ARMA3. I would like to keep the price of the motherboard to around £300 give or take £50 or so.

OR should I wait until they bring out a 4.4GHz CPU for the new X99 motherboards?
