So ive been working on this build as i have the avaible money. Im almost complete, i just need a motherboard and cpu. Ive chosen the ASUS Z97-K and I5-4650K as my final parts. One thing that came to mind is "is there a way to keep my current hard drive without performing a complete wipe or having to use another drive?". I've always done complete wipes when doing upgrading the motherboard on other computers. But this time is different, as i am performing the upgrade on my main computer. I dont really mind wiping as i have a 1tb portable hard drive that i can use to transfer my work files and maybe some game saves.

Here is my current setup
GPU: GeForce GTX 970
CPU: AMD FX(tm) - 4100 Quad-Core Processor
Memory: 8.00 GB RAM
Operation system: Windows 7 Home Premium
PSU: Thermaltake TR2 700w
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-M68MT-S2

So i guess my question is: Is their a way to upgrade my motherboard and CPU without having to do a full hard drive wipe?

Thanks for any info!

Solution
Changing motherboard/CPU is a 'sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't'.
There is no 100% either way.

The farther apart the hardware (as in AMD -> Intel), the greater likelihood of needing a reinstall.

Be prepared for a full reinstall. If you try it and it doesn't work, then what will you do?
Me personally, I'd just do the reinstall.
You can do it, it might require booting into safe mode and removing some drivers.
You will be changing the chipset, this might crash.
However when you load into safe mode it reverts to the standard plug and play drivers, then you can remove amd chipset drivers. Reboot, install intels.
Etc

Do you know of any guides/tutorials that would include this type of upgrading (From AMD to Intel)?

Hello... You can Manually delete all previous installed Drivers By going to Control Panel-Programs and Features.
1) Chipset
2) Sound chip
3) Network chip
4) Graphics

I always say to just plug it in and try it... and it Does work, time to time, for me between intel hardware... but others get fustrated between AMD to intel... and Windows OS, reporting hardware/software.
If you like to learn and have time to try it... then go for it... and let us know what you have learned. B )

Yeah, you might try that. Just have everything prepped so if/when things go south, you can recover.

I have two very similar Compaq laptops. Moving a Windows 7 drive from one to the other....didn't work.
Two somewhat similar Intel based desktops, moving a Win 7 drive didn't work.
2 other somewhat similar Intel based desktops...it worked.

It's a crapshoot. The easiest, fastest way forward (for me) was simply a reinstall of the OS and applications.

Okie, it be a nice little learning experience for me.

Thanks everyone for the insight! Time to read up and prepare for when the time comes.
