Macbook Air 4gb vs 8gb of RAM

My school is getting Macbooks. We are able to rent them out for the full year for $70. They are going to give us the cheapest 11 inch Macbook Air but we can pay for the extra 4gb of RAM. I multitask a lot, especially at school (photoshop or illustrator and chrome with music or a twitch stream playing) so I was thinking that the 8gb will be helpful. But since I don't want to spend the $100 if I don't have to I came here. I don't know how much RAM those programs really use but at school the computers have 8gb of RAM. They work fine but I don't know how much laptops need.

Solution
No, I don't mean physically upgrade it. But, can you ask for an upgraded computer after you have chosen one? I would personally go for the 8 GB version just to be safe. It's better to be safe than sorry if you cannot switch out to an 8 GB one.

I could survive if the laptop is a little bit slower but will I really benefit that much? My laptop only has 4gb of RAM but I don't do any photoshop or graphic design on it. If I don't need to get the 4gb of RAM then I won't.

It's really quite a close call, and comes down to if you want to pay for it. From what you listed you won't be using too much RAM so if you feel comfotable with 4 gigs stick with it. Can you upgrade at some point in time if you come to need the extra 4 gigs?

No. That's the problem. The Air isn't upgradeable because the RAM is soldered to the motherboard.
I have tried using Photoshop on a laptop with 2gb of RAM though, and it was extremely slow. I didn't try illustrator though because he didn't have it. Is this what will happen if I try to run it on the Air? The laptop wasn't terrible but it wasn't too good either and Photoshop wasn't letting me doing certain things because of a lack of RAM.

I was just talking to my parents and they agreed to pay the $70 and half of the RAM upgrade. I'm gonna get the upgrade just because I think 8gb will be better for multitasking and doing photoshop and illustrator and maybe some video editing if I can get in next year.
