Graphics Card Doesn't Recognize HDMI output

I have a GeForce GTX 760 that will not recognize my monitor via the HDMI output. The desktop background shows up, and I am able to right-click the screen, but no icons appear and I am only able to use the card via DVI input.

Any suggestions on where to go from here?

sounds like when it's plugged into HDMI, it's not set as the primary monitor. Plug it in to HDMI, right click on the screen, select Display Properties... and change the monitor to the "main display"
