iPhone 4S Screen goes black

Today I got the 4S and the screen kept going black but the phone is on still, I can phone my phone and it rings just the screen is black.

I went into settings, turned the brightness right up to see if it would turn it and it never. When I turned on auto-brightness and then turned the brightness to max the screen instantly went black.

When I turn the brightness up with auto-brightness off the screen doesn't go black I can see the display. What could be causing this?

What operating system version is installed on the 4s? The auto-brightness was causing issues with a specific version...
Where did you get the 4s, was it purchased used or new? If it was purchased from a store or something, just take it back for an exchange.

And when you say the screen "Goes black" do you mean completely black with NOTHING on the screen, or do you mean just very dim while still producing images? Look very closely at the phone and let us know. If its a problem with the LCD backlights, it could be a bad battery or simply a bad digital assembly.
