What is the difference between a laser and optical mouse in performance. Iv'e noticed laser mice are usually more expensive.

Solution
A laser is a type of light - directed in the same direction, meaning no or very little dispersion of beam.

Without getting into details, laser is generally more sensitive and works on all surfaces (I have a blue optical mouse and it doesn't work on blue mat, both red and blue optical mice do not work on glass table). It does require better optics, hence the price difference.

Laser works on very wide variety of surfaces and has more dpi generally, although optical has catches up in term of dpi in the recent years.

The downside of it is a lot of laser sensors does accelerations randomly and thus not that accurate and are normally not recommended for some games genre such as fps which complete control of the mouse are required, there are some that don't have such issue but feedback of those sensors are not good as well due to z-axis bugs.

Laser is not better then optical, same goes the other way, it just all about preference, as of now, laser mouse are only more expensive because its a newer technology and the sensors are a bit more expensive.

Take a look at this video by Logitech, pretty much sums it up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6X3zdMqNBU
