What do I need to be able to play games with higher graphics?

Hello everyone, when I built my computer about a year and a half ago I was looking more at price then a quality. When I try to play games on higher graphics settings my FPS drops significantly. I was wondering what I needed to upgrade to prevent this from happening. Here are my specs,

AMD Phenom IIx4 965 Processor 3.40 GHz
8.00 GB RAM
AMD Radeon HD 6670

What kind of games are you looking to play?

Overclocking the cpu will help but the most significant difference will be made with a gpu purchase. A r9 270x for example would give you a big jump in performance. But you would also need to tell us your psu model.

Without also knowing your budget I recommend that you read this article: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/gaming-graphics-card-review,review-32899-4.html

It lists the best gpus at different price points.

I wouldn't recommend buying anything more powerful than a r9 280x since your cpu might limit the juice you would get out of it. At 1080p a 280x would enable you to play at max settings on most games.
