How to monitor drive SMART data

What do the folks here use to keep an eye on drive SMART data? My system is Windows 7 Ultimate x64, if it matters.

I was running HWiNFO and it flagged up "Remaining Life:0" against my boot/C: drive…

Presumably, this had been working its way down from 100 to zero ever since I bought the PC in September 2012.

It would have been nice if something had told me "Disk failure likely within four weeks" rather than "Disk failure imminent", and coming across it by chance! I used to have such a monitor on my PC at work (I installed that one, but the details are lost in the mists of time).

I can't work out if I'd prefer email or popup notifications. I suspect that popup notifications might be a bit nerve racking, even when the failure is not anticipated for a few weeks.

Hey there, Apodida!

The best way to keep an eye on the S.M.A.R.T. data of your drive is using the HDD manufacturer's diagnostics tool or use a third-party utility.
You can check this thread for suggestions, in case your manufacturer doesn't have a specific diagnostics software:

However, nobody can predict the exact lifespan of the mechanical hard drives, thus I believe what you are looking for doesn't exist.
The best way to protect your data is to keep a backup somewhere other than your HDD.

Hope this helped! Good luck! :)
