Word replacement for 8.1?

Is there a free program that I can get to replace word? I just built my own pc with windows 8.1 and I do not have the money right now to buy office. Windows included "wordpad" but that doesn't have spell check. I am currently stuck with google drive and as useful as that is, its spell check isn't that good either.

I found OpenOffice more than adequate. However, LibreOffice got started when OpenOffice development was ceased (but appears started again) so I'm not sure which is better now.
