Hey!
I'm trying to get a new IP adress, and called my IPS for help. They said the only two methods for changing my IP was to turn my router off for about 5 minutes, then turning it back on, or to do it through CMD.

I first tried turning my router off for 5 minutes, and then one whole night, and it still didn't change.
Then I tried doing it through CMD by typing:

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

After writing each one of these, I got this weird error message. For me, it's in norwegian but I'll try to translate it the best I can.

"Cannot execute operations on Local connection* 11 while medium is offline.
Cannot execute operations on Local connection* 9 while medium is offline."

After these two come up, I get my connection back, but my IP never changes.
Any ideas?

Solution
ipconfig /xxx only works on your internal network and IP is issued by DHCP server built in to the router.

If you want to change the IP assigned by the ISP, as they said, turn off the modem/router for awhile and it they will issue you a new one.

Now the exception to this, is if they have a large DHCP allocation window, in which case it could take days for yours to expire and get a new IP.

Are you trying to change the IP address from your Service provider or just change the ip address of your computer?

Being on a local or home network when doing a /release /renew in cmd 9 out of 10 you will get the same ip address since no one new is coming along on the network and taking the ip address you just released. You can however go into you network settings and manually set you ip address and change it that way.

Why you need your IP address changed?

If you are on cable, you (usually) have fixed IP address. If you are on DSL, restarting the modem usually changes your IP address.

"ipconfig" updates info for all of the network cards in your computer, and Windows keeps a couple of "virtial" network adapters, so the messages you're seeing are normal. However, if you are behind a router, the IP address you are getting is from your local network.
