I need a new motherboard to partner my MSI GTX 970 SLi for when I upgrade to an Intel i7 4790K from my current AMD FX-6350, although picking one is just becoming a bit of a headache for me.

I originally had my sights set on a fairly high-end board with a PEX chip to allow for a minimum of 3-way SLi in the future. However having come to the conclusion that if I got to the point where I needed a 3rd GTX970 it would just make far more sense to upgrade to something like a GTX 980 SLi setup (or whatever new cards are available then), this makes the need for a PEX chip somewhat redundant.
I therefore need some help on choosing a motherboard that is going to give me good performance at a decent price but without unnecessary additional features - I don't need built-in wifi, fancy audio, or such. Just decent CPU and SLi performance.

I have researched into the two mentioned in the title and quite like the both of them, but any comments or recommendations on them would be helpful.

Thanks to all in advance.

I dont own a MSI z97 Gaming, but I do have the Ranger and I can only tell you it is a rock solid and very capable board.
Here (in the UK) the Gaming 5 is approx £108 ($161) and the Ranger is approx £120 ($179), so for me the Ranger would be worth the little extra, even though the specs are pretty similar.
Is the Ranger really that expensive there?
