im using my copy of windows 7 that i brought awhile back and its been on multiple motherboards and two hard drives due to upgrades and such, im installing it on my other pc thats half together so i can get it to boot into windows and i was wondering if i could use the same key, i lost the disk so i made another one using microsofts dvd/usb tool and its installing now. its not the oem version of the disk.

If it's the full version, you can use it as many times as you want. What you can't do is use it on two systems simultaneously, not legally. You can use an un-activated OS install for 30 days without a key, which might give you enough time to get the new system up, running and health-checked, but at some point you'll need to either switch to a free OS or purchase another copy of Windows so you can activate it.

darn i was hoping i could use it on multiple systems at once. what would happen if i used it on two systems at the same time, i finished installing windows on it and used the key but have not connected it to the internet yet, but i want to go online so i can download the windows updates and install drivers and do a few checks, would that be ok and would it work if i had both pc's online during that time?

If you have 4 PC's, yes.
Or Linux.
