Can I run audio through my monitor with HDMI while using DVI for video?

Hey, I have an ASUS VG248QE and some really nice studio monitors/speakers. However, I get some audio issues with my current cable and am trying to troubleshoot by running audio through my gpu instead of the audio jack.

I know I could simply run HDMI to my monitor for display and audio, but then I'd have to make due with 60hz instead of 144hz refresh rates.
Therefore, is it possible for me to have my Nvidia GTX 780 run both dual link DVI and HDMI to my monitor and set it up so that it only uses the HDMI for audio? Currently, using both cables, my PC thinks that I have two monitors running.

On a side note, I may end up purchasing a displayport cable and just handling it from that. I'm just unsure if that will end up solving it.

(If it's relevant at all, my speakers are M-audio BX5D2 and require me to use a 3.5mm to dual 1/4" audio cable in order to connect it to my pc. My right speaker gets noise that gets rather loud and troublesome whenever I start up a game or make my GPU work hard...also I'm using onboard audio which is inconveniently placed between the pci slot and the ports underneath my videocard).

Unfortunately not. Having it on the HDMI input is what lets it know to patch the audio from the HDMI to the speakers. I would go with the Displayport cause it allows audio and higher refresh rate.

On the other hand you could invest in a budget sound card. Probably cost a bit more but would also probably fix the problem and let you plug your speakers in directly to the PC with higher quality audio.

Yeah I've been considering that option (or more specifically an external DAC as I figure this noise is either coming from my videocard producing noise inside the case or interference throughout the cable, and therefore an internal sound card may not be too helpful.)
This was a pretty cheap cable I picked up at guitar center, anyways. I'm going to check out another cable this week and see if it alleviates my problems. If not, I may end up having to RMA my speaker or something.
I did end up getting audio to run to my monitor, and through its audio jack to my actual speakers, but audio quality was not too great. Plus it didn't fix the problem. Whenever I started up 3dmark or any game, I would get this nasty coil-whine like sound coming out of my right speaker. It's the strangest thing.

I'm guessing it's an audio cable issue since swapping out the "ring" cable (basically right audio jack) by plugging it into the left speaker reproduced the same sound issue, while the right speaker using the "tip" cable (left jack) would suddenly not have audio issues.

EDIT: I have it down to two things: either the cable can't plug all the way into my motherboard's audio out port, or there's interference hitting only the right cable. I'll assume it's the former. Also, it's worth mentioning that I have plugged this into both my laptop and my ipod without any audio issues at all.
