Different Size Modules on Separate Memory Channels

I currently own 2x4GM RAM modules, with 2 slots unoccupied in dual channel.

Is there any downside to adding, for example, 2x8GB modules for a total of 24GB of RAM. Basically, will Win7 recognize the new sticks as 8GB and all that?

So long as the modules are compatible with the motherboard and cpu requirements, and both new modules are used in the slots for the same bank, it should be fine. You could probably use them in any slots, they just wouldn't operate in dual channel. Old modules in one channel, new modules in the second channel.
