Hi everyone!

Yesterday while my utorrent was downloading stuff I got a cyclic redundancy check error. Then I googled about it. I downloaded SeaTools and got the next results

Short DST - Fail
Long generic- Pass
Short generic - Pass
SMART - Pass

Seatools says it can try to do something if I download seatools for DOS.

I've got Seagate ST3000DM001
What should / can I do?
Has the HDD started dying?

Solution
The number of errors has increased during the scan. IMHO that's a sign that the HDD is ill.

HDDScan reports the raw numbers in hexadecimal format rather than decimal. For example, the number of Reported Uncorrectable Errors has increased from 16D to 1B2.

BB __1 __1 __0 0000000001B2 Reported Uncorrectable Errors
BB __1 __1 __0 00000000016D Reported Uncorrectable Errors

Using Google's calculator, this means that the increase is ...

0x1B2 - 0x16D = 69 sectors

http://www.google.com/search?q=0x1B2+-+0x16D+in+decimal

Similarly, the increase in "pending" sectors is 496 = (0x228 - 0x38).

C5 _97 _97 __0 000000000228 Current Pending Sector Count
C6 _97 _97 __0 000000000228 Uncorrectable Sector Count
C5 100 100 __0 000000000038 Current...
I wouldn't trust that drive. Backup your data ASAP.

I would examine the SMART report with a tool such as CrystalDiskInfo.

http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-e.html

Look for reallocated, pending, or uncorrectable sectors. SeaTools only reports pass or fail for its SMART test whereas CrystalDiskInfo reports the attribute values.

SeaTools for DOS can "repair" bad sectors by overwriting them, but this would be data destructive.

You can also perform a full surface scan with a tool such as HDDScan (Windows) or MHDD (DOS).

already backed up.

Smart test was a pass in SeaTools at least

I've read about this product line. Apparently that's pretty common amongst users. 1-2 years and bam drops dead.

Repairing bad sectors or doing other voodoo is just a temporary solution, right? The drive can fail any time

Run Crystal Disk here's what I've got. Is this bad? I can't find the info to figure it out

oBQus.jpg

I'm just trying to find out if whatever I do is a temporary fix. If so I'm just gonna buy a new HDD and copy everything onto the new one while I can. I've backed up the important stuff but 3 TB to back up is not feasible.

The raw number of C5 and C6 were keeping changing periodically while I was doing a scan with HDDscan. It's bad right? The drive's gonna fail?

There's an option in CrystalDiskinfo to change the raw values to from HEX to DEC, which I assume, is a real number of bad sectors. It was 46 now it's 552

It's always concerning when those numbers increase. I notice that there are 365 (= 0x16D) Reported Uncorrectable Errors as well.

http://www.google.com/search?q=0x16d+in+decimal

Strangely, the Current value of the Read Error Rate is 118, which is only 2 points below the ideal value of 120.

I would keep monitoring the drive's attributes and maintain regular backups. BTW, I suspect that the C5/C6 counts may be LBA counts rather than physical sector counts. That's because they are divisible by 8. An Advanced Format drive has 8 LBAs per physical sector.

I really don't understand you're talking about. I have a limited knowledge of these things. haha I can't even get where you got these numbers )

I've done the scan. Here what it is now.
How should I monitor and what do I have to pay attention to?

C5 100 100 __0 000000000038 Current Pending Sector Count
C6 100 100 __0 000000000038 Uncorrectable Sector Count

Pending sectors are those that have been identified as bad and are waiting to be reallocated (replaced with spares). When they are replaced, the Reallocated Sectors Count will increase.

Advanced Format drives have physical sectors with a size of 4096 bytes. However, the drive still communicates with the OS using 512-byte logical blocks (LBAs). This means that each physical sector is divided into 8 LBAs. Attribute BB appears to be counting physical sectors whereas C5 and C6 appear to be counting LBAs. Therefore a Current Pending Sector Count of 0x228 (= 552) probably reflects 69 physical sectors (= 552 / 8).

In short, your drive is developing "grown defects" and should be monitored closely. In particular, watch the Reallocated Sectors Count.
