Sorry to bring up an old topic but im looking at buying a i7 4790k or an i5 4690k. I've got the money for the 4790k if I want it but who doesn't like saving money? (can invest extra cash into better things down the line if needs be) Does the extra performance warrant the extra cost? It will be paired with a MSI GTX 970.

Some people have said it offers a decent increase in FPS.
I play fairly system intensive games; bf4, far cry, crisis

The i7 would give an increase of about 3-4 FPS in games compared to the i5. Most games don't utilize hyper threading that's why there is almost no increase in FPS when compared, most certainly they won't utilize it any time soon mostly because there aren't many people that could utilize it. Also 99% of developers are rushing theyr games to hit the market as soon as possible so they don't care about optimizing and support of something that just a small number of users would utilise. Even if everyone did have hyper threading it would take years until full support. Just look when did 64 bit CPUs launch-way back in 2003. Even today in 2015 there is only a small number of games made to run natively for 64 bit OS. The best thing is to buy the...
Right now, an i7 doesn't offer a meaningful improvement over an i5, but further down the line, if games become more optimised for multi-threaded processors, that could change. Personally, I think we're still years away from this, by which time, both processors would have long been redundant.

Buy the i5 and overclock it; that will give you a more meaningful boost than an i7 probably will.

I currently own a i5 4670k and gtx 970. I Overclocked my video card 1500 mhz and left my cpu stock speed. The usage never gets close to 100% while gaming, the most I have seen is 76% playing evil within. So, long story short, unless you are going from some crazy sli configuration, i5 4670k will run every card on the market with ease.

Thank you for a detailed answer. I do have intentions of running SLI gtx 970s so I may just invest now because I do have the money. Although I'm still torn between the i5 with the gtx 970 or if i should buy the i7 and sli 970s
later on hahaha.
