I recently put a Zotac GTX 970 in my PC, and i looked at the temps out of curiosity.

55-60 when idle, and 78-80 when games are being played.

Is this too hot?

It is inside this computer:

Things are relitevly tight in there

Thoughts?

The Zotac cards seem to top out at 80c regardless of case airflow or having more than one in the same PC. The suggestion that you replace the TIM is a really bad one, the card has a five year warranty so just RMA it if it goes pop.

The max temp for the GTX 970 is 98C.
As long as your GPU does not exceed 80C you should be ok.
That being said, those temperatures do seem somewhat high.
Things inside the case being tight as you say, you might want to optimize airflow/add some fans if you want to err on the safe side, but it's not critical.

it is your case u said it your self things are tight in there anyway 80C is OK just dont let it go any higher than 85 C
around 98C is when the card starts throttling

also if you're using the PSU that came with that PC change it it is a 350W peak psu that card needs a 450watt quality PSU minimum i wouldn't want to burn a 340~ usd card if i were you

u should try adding some fans or maybe get a new case all together

Phanteks is a relatively new case manufacturer; they offer well thought out and modular cases for sharp prices, might be worth looking into those.
Most good manufacturers make sure their cases geared towards gaming have good airflow.
Other than that it's just personal preference for aesthetics.
More good manufacturers:
Corsair, Gigabyte, Bitfenix ...

I don't know what motherboard the CM6870 has; I'd guess its standard ATX; have a look at the motherboard model to make sure.

It'll depend on your cards bios settings, but in my case, the EVGA 970 starts thermal throttling at 82C by default. With the default settings my fans weren't really kicking in at that point, I had to set a more aggressive fan curve using EVGA precisionX software. Now my temperatures don't pass 70C with the fans still only hitting 70% max rpm (and at those rpm's I don't have the turbine noises either).

Completely agree, I forgot the card was brand new when suggesting to replace the TIM. That is usually the first thing I do with an out of warranty card.
