CD drive won't detect my Windows 7 restore disk

Okay, so I'm trying to restore my old Windows XP, Dell Dimension 8300 with a Windows 7 32-bit restore disk. From all that I've read this is possible. However, my CD-drive will not recognize, let alone boot off of the W7 disk.

The CD-drive works with everything else, and the Disk is not damaged as far as I can tell. I even started the restore with my XP CD. So, is what I'm trying just not possible? Or is this just an issue with the drive/CD?

Thanks in advance.

the cd must be corrupt to not work at all. you will need a new win 7 cd to do the install. a quick google search will give many download links for a new iso. just burn it with some kind of iso utility and it should work. i use poweriso myself for this as it is free and easy to use.

be sure to search for the version you need such as 32 bit vs 64 bit or home premium vs pro vs ultimate. it has to match the key you are using to work.

if it will boot the xp disk, this tells me it is something wrong with the win 7 disk. is it a retail disk or one that has been burned from an image?

if you put the disk in while the system is running does it read it and start the set-up from withing windows?

It is Dell disk that came with a different computer.

If I try to load the disk while the computer is on, then the computer will give me a BSOD with glitchy white typing on it.
