Hey there, first i would just like to say that i am a complete amateur when it comes to hardware, still i have a problem wich i just can't solve.

When i start up the computer everything is fine until i hit the windows logo screen, when that finishes i just get these blue vertical lines on the screen, this started happening a days back when i was in-game, i got the message that the graphics card driver stopped working, but that the problem had been resolved, so i just kept on playing. I decided to reboot the computer, and when i came to the windows logo screen(right before the user logon screen) i got these blue vertical lines, and i couldn't do anything about it. i formated the computer and everything seemed fine, until i installed the graphics card driver and i ended up with the same problem. i tried up to 6 different versions of the driver and i still get the same problem. So my question is this; does this mean that my graphics card is dead or is there some way for me to resolve this problem?

Again, if there are any more info you need to let me know, as i said before i am an amateur when it comes to hardware so im pretty sure there is some info that i have left out here, but if you let me know if there is anything more you need, i'll do what i can to get the info needed.

Thanks in advance

Dez

Solution
It is most likely a hardware issue - first of all you have a choice - either you can RMA it or try and reapply the thermal compound yourself and hope it solves it

1) GPU is probably dead, had the same "display driver stopped working" on a old computer and the gpu was indeed dead.

2) Change your vga/hdmi/dvi cable. We had problems with weird colors and we found out the cables were bad or damaged.

wow, didn't expect answers this quick.

First: If i boot in safe mode there is no problem.

Second: There is no overclocking done on this computer, i don't have the nerve to touch that stuff. And considering the computer has been running flawless for 5 months, im pretty sure the PSU isen't the problem.

But asking again just to be 100% sure, is my graphics card dead?

Hi,

I have the same issue. I updated my drivers to catalyst 14.12 omega and once I rebooted after the Microsoft logo I got vertical blue lines and had to reboot in safe mode. Also tried several different versions of drivers going back to version 13.12. I then reformatted and re-installed everything and still have the same issue. I'm running 2 ATI 6900M on my laptop and pretty much gave up at this point. My laptop has discrete graphics and that one works fine. I'm no expert but I think the cards are dead.

When a computer fails to start it can be software
related (perhaps a damaged or corrupt operating
system) or hardware related (a failing hard drive,
video card, etc.) Another posibility is the
computer became infected with some kind of
malware that has damaged or corrupted the boot
files. It can be very time consuming to try to
isolate the problem.
Can you boot your computer into Safe Mode by
using Advanced Boot Options? If yes, you may
be able to roll back your computer to a date/time
before the problem began with a restore point.
Safe Mode
System Restore
If there are damaged or corrupt system files you
may be able to repair them by running a system
file checker scan from an elevated command
prompt (option two.) If problems are found, run
the scan 3 times and reboot your computer after
each scan.
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File
Checker
