I'm planning a new build for a HTPC/DVR/Media Server build and am slightly hung up on what to do for a tuner. I'm torn on whether to use a stand-alone type (e.g. HDHomeRun) or internal PCIe TV Tuner Card.

The plan is to use either XBMC or Windows Media Player (or other software if suggested) and have the HTPC act as a replacement for a set top box/DVR. The media server portion would also be networked to be available to the rest of the devices in the house (smart TV's, tablets, smartphones, computers, etc).

Is there a specific card/software combo that is known to work very well for this type of arrangement that has a good, simple interface? Thanks in advance for any suggestions! :)

you can run XBMC alone but if you want to stream to another device.. you can add HDHomeRun tuner. (i think this will serve as a backend server). keep in mind, you still need atleast the basic cable to use the tuner and rent a cablecard from your cable provider. below is my latest HTPC build.

I am actually in the same situation as you are minus the cable thing. I am looking to be piping in free OTA content via HTPC with TV Tuner as well as having a NAS host media to other devices from DVD's, music, and converted VHS tapes. I am still torn between the OS for my NAS build; freeNAS or Amahi. Regardless, both of these support PLEX, and that is probably what I am going to use for streaming media content in my house.
