hey all, having a very weird issue with my new build. it seems that after a few hours of use windows will completely slow down and fully lock up. this build is fairly new and im running windows 7 64bit specs are: asrock z87 extreme 4, i7 4790k overclocked to 4.8GHz, 16gb of adata xpg v2 1600mhz, sli gtx 780, 240GB Kingston hyperx as my main ssd where windows is installed, and 3 WD drives for storage. its seems strange but after hours of gaming and use without any issues itll just randomly lock up when im just at the desktop not doing much. could this be due to my overclock on the cpu? I thought maybe the ssd was bad but its only a year old so it should be ok right? any help on figuring out this issue would be great as its very annoying. also the ram is brandnew as of lastnight(I upgraded) but even before the new ram I was having this same issue. any help would be great thanks.

Z87 motherboard (one generation back) paired with the i7 4790 (latest Haswell Refresh)... is only supported on the ASRock Z87 Extreme 4 after BIOS version P2.70. What BIOS revision are you at? On the surface you shouldn't be having any issues so focus on the basics in checking / updating drivers, firmware and BIOS versions. I would focus on the BIOS since "it randomly locks up when sitting idle" could be the throttling / power state changes going from Haswell to Haswell refresh that the Z87 motherboard didn't natively support (without an update).

You might check for viruses with a full scan, and malware with a full scan w/Malwarebytes. It sounds like something is using all your resources and clock cycles (the delay). It might also be possible you have too much stuff running in the background. Check your tray for stuff you can disable. You might also want to run CCleaner and do the Clean and Registry portions both in case you have software conflicts or registry errors.

i flashed my bios back when i had my i5 4670k as i knew i would need to. im currently running the most recent bios version from asrock. interms of virus scans, i typically run malwarebytes once a month or so, but i keep my system extremly clean in that sense. also on average i only have about 70-80 processes running at all times, i have my few temp monitoring apps, and any game apps needed(origin, steam, uplay) but not much else. it just seems strange that i can get through bf4 for 4 hours or any other game without issues, then when im just browsing the web, my system will slow down to a crawl, then lock up. im really hoping this isnt a hardware level issue. any more ideas?

If it only happens in the web browser, try a different browser for awhile as a test. See if it still does it.
If you are using Firefox, by all means run CCleaner. When my FF cache gets too full, it seems like my web browsing slows way down.
To me, 70-80 processes seems like a lot. I only have 61 running right now. Maybe one of those is hogging the resources. Is there some way you can monitor your processes while you are working to see which one is the culprit when the delay hits? Maybe a 2nd display?

i use task manager for monitoring cpu usage but thats about it. i did lastnight, manage to open task manager while my machine was struggling, but then task manager stopped responding and locked up. i was in a skype call aswell and skype was running no problem for a while while windows was fully frozen. seems strange to me. also i use IE for web browsing, but have never had this issue before. for the second task manager was running, i didnt notice anything odd interms of cpu usage and also i figured if my cpu was being maxxed, my temps would have gone up which they didnt.

i really dont believe its ram as i just added my new ram lastnight(completely replacing my old ram) and this was happening before with my old ram. im just hoping this isnt a hardware issue. could my overclock be causing this? i feel like an unstable overclock would show itself while gaming while the cpu is stressed not while im doing next to nothing

I upped the multiplier, changed load line Cali to 3 and added very slight voltage. Tested with adia64 and of course hours of game play and it seems very stable through all that. Am I missing anything ?

You might want to try ONLY disabling turbo and using the multi as a test. On the i5-4690K in the rig in my sig. below, I was able to have a stable OC with just disabling turbo and increasing the multi from 35 to 44. No other changes. My board seems to handle vcore increases automatically on its own pretty good. I may have been able to go higher, but I'm at my temp limit now with the little 120mm Corsair H6 AIO.

Maybe your board doesn't work like mine. Or maybe with the volatge set manually, the auto/dynamic voltage is off. Mine starts out at 0.7xx volt at idle and goes up to 1.20x volt at 100% usage.
But except for what I mentioned above, including CCleaner for possible software conflicts, I guess I'm out of ideas.

Always hard to do troubleshooting from afar. But that is my educated guess. Not that I haven't been wrong more times than I can count ;-)
I'd revert back to stock settings in BIOS and see if you can simulate the issue. Then I'd start disabling background apps and see if that helps. The way you describe it, it sounds like a software conflict, but of course it could be hdwr. Has the new build ever been stable, or did you load it up right away with software before you had time to test it?

That shouldn't have made any difference. But if it is a software conflict, that might help. Sort of a brute force way of helping, but it's up to you. Lots of work sometimes to get the PC back like you like it. Give CCleaner a run. It can't hurt.

Lol... probably not. I have kind of hogged this thread. Folks will see all the replies and shy away. Maybe start a new thread with a slightly different title so the mods don't get wise. I'll try to stay away.
