Yeah I know, both are pretty old and I'm planning to upgrade soon but I'd rather upgrade everything at once. I got the 4300 from a friend who upgraded for free and was wondering why it benches and seems a tad bit slower than my Phenom at 4ghz when I OC the 4300 to 4.4-4.6ghz. I'd imagine that the 4300 would be a bit faster? Could it just be "bad" now? I get it for free so I'm not mad, but it worked in my friends build fine I think.

The fx 4300 should be pretty similar to the Phenom II 965. The 965 has four complete cores. The 4300 has four integer cores but only two modules making it score more like a dual core cpu for some benchmarks. If it were "bad" it probably wouldn't work at all.
If you did not properly apply thermal paste in the switch, it could be overheating and throttling to a lower clock.

Cooler and paste were applied correctly. Just think it's weird that I'm getting 1.5x the performance on the 965 even with overclock difference. Don't see why anyone would ever buy the 4300 now. Thanks though, forgot it wasn't a real quad core too.
