How to solve crossfire R9 290 MSI Twin Frozr temps?

I currently have a R9 290 MSI Frozr gpu and seeing that R9 290's prices are crashing as stock is being cleared, I was tempted to pick up another just for some killer fps (2560x1080 res, playing Star Citizen Alpha so need as much power as possible).

However after much research, I saw that 2 MSI R9 290 Twin Frozr turn your PC into an oven with the top card hitting 94oC almost instantly, regardless of airflow in the PC and spacing between the cards. This made sense seeing that the cooler is not really good enough for such a hot chip in crossfire resulting in the top card getting nicely baked.

But I would really like crossfire without the super heat cooking the top card and noise from the fans running at 100%. So does anyone know of the solutions?

  • Would getting a closed loop water system for another MSI R9 290 Twin Frozr (eg. Corsair HG10) solve the issue? Plus would I retain the warranty as MSI allow removal of the cooler? The issue with this though is VRM temps and getting my hands on a blower fan

Or would using a Sapphire Vapor X R9 290 as the top card suffice seeing that it has the best stock cooling solution of all the R9 290s?

Thanks

Probably water cooling would be the way to go. If you could cool them both that way, it would help even more since the bottom card would heat up the top one even less. Or....you could sell your 290 and just get a 295x2. Might be around the same cost after you buy another 290 and buy a cooler for the two cards. Plus the 295x2 would have a factory warranty.

Aye, I had thought about that and looked into getting one especially with them now being ~ £500 and pretty quiet cards.
The only hesitation I have is what are AMDs new cards going to be like and how soon will they be released. The shrink + HBM makes me think they could be very impressive, and the fact that retailers are dumping stock would make me believe that they will be coming out very soon. However, will the new gpus be quiet (probably not), and will I be able to achieve better performance with the new cards then with a R9 295x2 for the same price? This is one of those questions where I known hindsight will kick me in the teeth.
