I have a friend on Facebook, who knows nothing about computers. She owns a desktop by Alienware. It's about a year and a half to two years old. She constantly complains about it and says how gutless it is. So I of course say "Well, you could always upgrade the graphics card" or something along those lines.

She then emphatically states that you can't upgrade it. You have to buy special parts from Alienware (like some custom GPU bracket or something). I took what she said with a grain of salt, I asked if it was a laptop (which of course we couldn't upgrade) and she said "No" and assured me it was a desktop. Now I'm imagining some Razer Project Christine stuff...

What computer is this? Does Alienware actually have a computer with "locked" parts? I know this is a weird question... but I can't tell if she's just mistaken, or if there actually is a desktop computer out there that you can't upgrade without using special Alienware parts.

How about just getting the model number from her and we'll be able to provide a definitive answer. Generally, the Alienware desktops use bog standard components (at least the ones in the last few years) and are fully upgradeable.
