Is my modem the problem or my router? Or the ISP?

Very often, my internet stops working. It says I'm connected, but has that yellow triangle. I don't think it's my ISP(Time Warner Cable) because my friend has the exact same internet as me, but his internet was just fine. When my internet reconnected, the ping went from 400 to over 1000. Which one do I need to update, my modem or router?

Modem: SB5101 SURFboard modem
Router: Linksys Smart Wi-Fi EA4500 ( I think)

yellow triangle = connected to a network, but not getting internet from the modem.

In this situation it doesn't matter if your friend has the same ISP. This might be an issue with your wires or modem/router configuration. In particular, the wire going in to your modem or in to the router. It is definitely one of the two.
