Hi,

From my research so far, it looks like the graphics card is the best thing to upgrade on my gaming pc. I won't be overclocking, I game on a 24" 1920 x 1080 monitor and I'm fine with either Nvidia or AMD.

Some of the graphics cards I've been looking at are the Radeon R9 280, 280x, 290, 290x and GeForce GTX 760,770, 970. Ideally I would like to get the best graphics card that my PSU can handle. I'm open to any suggestions.

Specs:

Psu: OCZ500MXSP ModXStream Pro 500W 80Plus Semi-Modular High Performance ATX PC
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666)
CPU: Intel Core i5-2500 Sandy Bridge Quad-Core 3.3GHz
Motherboard: MSI PH61A-P35 (B3) LGA 1155 Intel H61
Case: Cooler Master Elite 430 - Mid Tower Computer Case
Storage: Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 500GB 7200
Optical: LG 22X Super-Multi DVD Burner 22X

Thanks for the assistance!

GTX 970 hands down mate. you can keep your current PSU as well.
I have the 970 paired with an i5 and they are just meant for each other.
I got the EVGA 970 and absolutely am in love with it, but I might have chosen the gigabyte windforce for the fans or MSI for those sick heatpipes if I looked around more.
enjoy :)
The absolute best for your PC would be a GTX 980, but you need to upgrade the power supply for that.

If you want to get by without upgrading the PSU, you might be able to use the GTX 970, not sure its power requirements exactly but I know its very efficient. If not that then your next best choice is probably the R9 285.

The best card your pc can handle is the gtx 980. The 980 has a 165 watt tdp while your 6870 has a tdp of 151 watts. I'm sure your psu can handle a 14 watt difference. Personally, I would go for the 970 because it costs much less for only a slight performance decrease. Both will give a huge performance increase and pair excellently with that i5.
