XFX Radeon R7950 - Dead or just malfunctioning?

Hi Everyone! Yesterday I was playing WoW and my screen went blank. Not black, not BSOD, just a dark gray color with visible vertical lines. No response, so I powered down the computer. When I turned it back on, the POST screen was covered in a checker board pattern of bright green lines, and the Windows welcome screen had three vertical bars of closely spaced horizontal blue lines about an inch wide. Sorry, no SS available, so I hope my description is enough. The only way I could actually get in to Windows was in safe mode, otherwise the screen just went black. Even in safe mode, though, the same artifacts appeared. I attempted to install the most recent driver while in safe mode and it just errored out almost immediately.

I took the card out and plugged the monitor into the on board DVI slot to make sure it wasn't the monitor. Machine started up and the graphics looked as good as on board graphics can be expected to look.

I re-seated the card with no luck, and I switched the card to the other PCIe slot on the mobo with no luck. Same artifacts appeared regardless of the PCIe slot that I used.

So, while I think I already know the answer, I just wanted to ask anyway: Is there anything I've overlooked? Or can I safely assume that it's dead? It's 2.5 years old, and I've never had a vid card go bad on me, so I'm probably due. I just want to make sure it's dead before I replace it.

Thanks very much for your insight. Much appreciated!

J

Hello,

We're sorry you are having issues with your 7950. It sounds like POST artifacts which are nearly always GPU related (unless the signal cable/monitor are faulty).

Please create a ticket at xfxsupport.com and PM me the Ticket#. I will personally help resolve your RMA.

Thank you
Because no drivers are loaded during POST, video errors at this time are always caused by a hardware issue and you've ruled out the cable, monitor and PCI-E slot so I'd look for your invoice or check through your online order history for proof of purchase and contact XFX for a warranty return.
Don't give up on that RMA! Depending on your country and exact time of purchase (or if you registered for the lifetime warranty) you could still be in with a good chance of getting the card replaced.

Thank you everyone for your responses! Truly appreciated. And thank you XFX_Support for your attention to this. Definitely not expected, but that's the sort of thing that'll keep me buying XFX products down the road :)

Quick edit: I'm setting up an account of XFX support and I'll send you a PM as soon as I have a ticket number. Thanks again!
