So I've been thinking about this for a while. Now we have computers (not yet for consoles, but surely soon enough) that can run games that are so realistic and so detailed that you can almost make no difference between real life and virtual games. It's amazing how far this technology has progressed but is this it? Now what will be the next step? Let's say that next year they make a gtx 1000 or AMD r10 290 ( just a example. ) and they run ANY next-gen games and these games can't be more detailed than that. Is that the peak? I mean what will games be now? Surely after computer hits the peak of performance, the consoles will probably be right behind, then the handheld consoles and then mobiles. But then what? I mean they can't make better GPU's anymore since it's the best of the best and games are so detailed now that it's not even possible anymore to make it prettier and more realistic. Will we turn our desires to Virtual Reality?

VR is the next step going on now they have just begun to touch in gaming. So no, gaming will never reach the "peak" of "this is it, we are there, it doesn't get any better than this" stage as long as we are free to imagine, the mind has no boundaries in creativity. I would love to have a holographic chess set in my living room that looked as real as real life characters, what ever I deem them to be that day :)

Also would be cool to sit in a VR cockpit of a fighter jet that had motion, sound, g-force simulation and smell. Your hands are represented by VR hands controlled by your movements controlling the aircraft engaged in battle with your wing-man as you maneuver through ground defenses controlled by other VR players to deploy...

Ok let's say that in 5 years we have reached the TOP in games details. It's even better looking than real life. The grass looks, let's say more, realistic than real. What will happen to enterprises like AMD/NVIDIA?

there can never really be a top, as things happen in games that could never happen in real life so there will always be a demand for more power and the ability to render complex designs.

Also keep in mind we all though computer graphics peaked in 2007 with Crysis...

Na, as long as we can dream, we can build it..... :)

Yup.............. Technology changes every day and i don't think it could ever reach a point that is the best. Humans are always pushing to be better at everything.
For example, my first cell phone was a really really big one with a huge antenna. But at that time it was amazing to actually have one. Years later i got another phone that had a coloured screen and that was even more amazing.
Years later i got a touch screen phone that was even more amazing than the last phone i had.
Years later i got a bigger, better touch screen phone that is the most amazing phone i ever had.
Years later i got a slightly bigger, better, touch screen phone that some how was more amazing than the last...............
See where this is going..........
The same goes for games.....
Look at one of my favourites - Far Cry
I played the first one about 3 years ago, then the second, then the third one to me was just, yes amazing!!! I just finished playing the fourth one, and yeah...... I can't imagine what part 5 would look like.
I guess there would be a point in the future when games would look so real, it might actually look better than real life. However, there will always be something that can be done to improve the graphics.

Okay so imagine a game like GTA 5 and you have no more ugly looking textures anymore. For example the light switch is ACTUALLY in 3D and not just a flat texture put on the wall. Let's say that EVERY window has a live NPC that actually interacts within his home. Let's even say that the graphics are better in the game than real life and you can run it on a 8k virtual reality goggles. I know I'm abusing but I'm just giving absurd examples. Let's say that if you see a trash bag on the ground and shoot it, it actually has EVERY LITTLE SINGLE trash in it move and pop out of the trash bag. Let's say that hair isn't a flat texture anymore. It's actually REAL hair. Let's say that the eyebrows are also not a texture but actual hair that moves independently. Will it really be worth to buy their next-gen gpu? Or will they even make a new one to start iwth?
