Should i buy a dual core for a htpc or get a 4 core? G3220 vs 860k 750k

Solution
If you're going to be playing games with it too, unless they will be casual / Flash-based titles only, I'd recommend more than two cores. Although most games can still run on a dual-core, a few are beginning to appear that don't (at least not without applying a hack of some sort).
I'd probably choose an i3 over an 860K or 750K. It will use less power, which means cooler operation, which means less fan noise.

A dual core is a good compromise between cost and performance. Some programs actually require 2 cores and the first 4 core requirement came out in December. I would get a Pentium G3258.

What is the cheapest i3?

Will there be more games that do this?

The i3 is a hyperthreaded CPU, meaning that although it only has two physical cores, to the operating system (and any games), it looks like it has four cores. The one I linked is slightly faster than the i3-4130, but not by enough to make a big difference.

I am assuming you are referring to games... to be precise those games are Dragon Age: Inquisition and Far Cry 4. However, they do not specifically require a CPU with 4 cores, rather a CPU that can execute 4 threads at once. That could be a quad core CPU like the AMD FX-4xxx series CPUs or Intel's Core i3 CPUs which are dual core CPUs with hyper threading.

the g3258 has half the gpu cores of the i3. if your going to be gaming on the intel igpu, you dont really want the g3258. it is designed to be a low thread power machine, not htpc duty.

if your just going to do light gaming, web browsing, and watching bluray/web/h264 video, the amd a6 or a8 is plenty and in gaming will pass up the i3 since their gpus are stronger.

That is incorrect.

Both have only two core. The Core i3 has hyper threading which allows it to process 4 threads instead of only 2 threads.

im talking about the igpu hd4600 cores. it has half of full hd4600 cores.
