I just recently built a computer and i need a hard drive. My dad's computer has a 1TB hard drive with windows 8. My plan was to remove his hard drive and put it in my computer (it has all of the right sata connections). Could I use his hard drive as a boot drive on my computer? And will it also have windows 8 on it for me to use? (The computer came pre-installed with windows 8) Thanks.

Solution
2 issues:

1. Operation. No, it will probably not boot. At all.

2. Licensing. That preinstalled Windows 8 is licensed to that original motherboard. And the license key exists in that motherboard.
You cannot use it in a new PC.

3. Even if 1 & 2 were not considerations, now your dad's PC has no OS.

Solution:
Include an OS into the budget for your new PC.
