Hi,

My friend lives in a two-story house.

He has his main router downstairs. However, he recently bought a new computer that he's planning on setting up in his room which is upstairs. The WiFi signal is incredibly bad in his room. We've asked what could be the best solution to him getting internet upstairs without running a direct ethernet cable and we've been told that powerline adapters are the way to go.

He currently has Verizon FiOS, 50mbps, router model Actiontec MI424WR Rev. I

We don't know which powerline adapter kit to get. And we don't know how to go about setting up the old router he has as an AP (access point). His old router is the same model as his new one. Exactly the same: Actiontec MI424WR Rev. I

Which powerline adapter kit do you guys recommend?

And can anyone instruct us with how to set it all up? We would appreciate it.

Thanks.

Powerline setups depend a lot on the house wiring.
If the house is wired with coax for TV, another thing he might consider is MoCA devices.

I have one upstairs. Plugs into the same coax as everything else. Ethernet cable off that MoCA device. Wired speed is exactly the same as if wired directly into the router.

First off, change that FiOS router. The original ActionTec MI424WR is not the greatest.
I have 50/50 FiOS, and I just changed mine from that MI424WR to the newer 'Quantum' router from Verizon, and my WiFi speed changed thusly:

Same PC (laptop), router in the same place as the old.
