Is this GPU compatible? Critique my internal setup?

Solution
You have PCI ex connector on your board. So your motherboard is compatible with it. State your PSU so that we can see any trouble with the power. If that's fine, you are good to go.

GPU: 4GB Gigabyte GTX 970 G1
CPU: AMD FX 8120 eight-core
PSU: XTREME GEAR 700W ATX
MoBo: ASUS m5a97

As far as my CPU cooling goes, the picture shows the setup. I feel like the airflow is very sloppy and any suggestions would be appreciated!

Yes your GPU is compatible with your other components.

Is your rear fan is an intake? Set it to exhaust. Also Add another fan as exhaust to the top of that CPU cooler to get that hot air out of the case from top. Do you have a front intake fan? How many fans do you use?

Rear fan is exhaust, I have a side panel fan that is essentially on top of my heat sink, also exhaust. So rear fan (exhaust), side panel fan (exhaust), fan on one side of heat sink (exhaust), fan on other side of heat sink (exhaust). 4 fans total. What is a front intake fan and what purpose would intake serve? I'm ignorant when it comes to cooling.

Front intake means near the HDDs on the front there's a fan mount. If you have a fan that takes the air inside, that'll cool your HDDs /SSDs. Set your side panel fan to blow air to the cooler.

Than you'll have

rear fan exhaust
Side panel intake
Fan to of the heatsink to exhaust
fan on the bottom to push the air to the heatsink.
