Can i underclock a GTX 480 to meet my power supply's capabilities

I have a GTX 480. My power supply is an EVGA 430w. The card needs 1 6 pin and 1 8 pin power connector. I only have 1 6 pin connector. Can i underclock it so that it doesn't need the 8 pin or is that dangerous?

This is a terrible Idea, but if you are willing to bet his machine on it I digress.

I've run crossfire 7850's on a 430 watt psu and it was totally fine. Would I tell someone else to do it? No it's a bad idea. That doesn't mean it can not be done.

344 watts is what you are looking at for proper function of this psu to avoid degrading capacity and longevity.

You will be hard pressed to run any system with gtx 480 on that amount of power.

The PSU is decent. What CPU are you using? If the rest of the system is not too power hungry the PSU can do the job. You just have to use a Molex to 6-pin adapter. Both PCI-E connectors must be plugged in.

NO a gtx 480 is far to power hungry to run on that power supply.. Even if you wanted to risk it and use adapters there simply are not enough molex connections on the psu to accomplish it, unless you use the 2 molex to 1 8 pin adapter. Now that would be sketchy and I really doubt the card would allow the system to boot.

It's a fine psu but it's not up to this task.

Im all for using the full capacity of the psu as I have done in the past, but please look here.

EVGA 430 provides 34A on the 12V rail. That is 406W. If I am not mistaken 480 needs about 250W. The Anandtech test uses Intel Core i7-920. For that of course 400W are not enough. But if you are using a more efficient system 34A should be enough. Btw the PSU already has one 8-pin connector.

I must agree that using a PSU at full capacity is a bad idea. But if you really want to do it should work for a while. Then probably you have to change PSU hoping it didn't damaged anything when it died.

Thanks, i thought it would have been a bad idea too. Thank you for your input, i should be fine with my GT 620 until i get a 750 ti for my birthday. My system should draw about 300w~ With it. Does that sound good?
