I have my pc connection to my router and my router connected to my network switch. I have a wd my book live due as a back up to my data. ever now and then i try to copy new files to my Wd my book live due. in the past i have been able to connect my WD book to my mother board Lan and copy files, my computer currently has an extra Lan adapter (intel (R) PRO/100 GT desktop Adapter) i use this to connection directly to my router & internet.

Some how when i tired to connect my WD book to my motherboards LAN and the WD book is not recognized, i tired to map a network drive, i click on browse and i can see "MY BOOK" in network but once i click on it i get error "the remote device or resource won't accept the connection". I can connect My Book to my switch and my book is found. I like to connect My Book to my motherboard LAN to transfer files because it's faster but all of the sudden it won't connect any more. I can see both LAN adapters on device manager and there is not yellow exclamation.

Anyone have any ideas on what is going on or how to fix it?
Thanks.

IP stands (not ID) stands for Internet Protocol. LAN and LAN 2 can't be on the same network and they can't both be connected to the switch. Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection has IP address 192.168.0.6. How did it end up having that IP address which is totally incorrect? Why does the My Book have IP address 192.168.0.18 if it isn't connected to the switch?

I suggested 192.168.3.1 for the WD My Book and 192.168.3.2 for the LAN so that they are on a different network. The first 24 bits of the IP address can't be the same on both LAN and LAN 2 if your network mask is 24 bits.

If configured correctly, ipconfig /all should return the following values (I left out what isn't important):

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2...
You need to set a static IP address on the PC's LAN port used to connect to the WD Book; otherwise it won't work. Why is your PC connected to the router instead of the switch? Normally all internal systems are connected to the switch which should be connected to the router to access the Internet.

thank you for the reply. i am not familiar with giving static IP's. I am able to get to the LAN port internet protocol version 4 properties but i am not sure what to do from here?

I didn't think it made a difference on the way the my pc was connected to the router or switch.

Is the WD Book configured to get an IP address from a DHCP server? If not, then you need to assign a static IP address to the PC and the WD Book.

It makes a performance difference where the PC is connected if the router is 100Mbps and the switch is Gigabit (only old switches are 100Mbps). If both the PC and WD Book are connected to a Gigabit switch, then copying files will be much faster.

Hey there, 2quik!

BTW, GhislainG for the win with the awesome troubleshooting suggestions! :)
As for how to configure the Static IP address on your WD My Book, I believe this tutorial from our knowledge base might help you with the step-by-step: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=IWO20Y

Hope this helps! Let us know how it goes afterwards!

Ideally the WD My Book and the PC would both be connected to a Gigabit switch. Using static IP addresses will definitely work, but they have to be on a different network than the DHCP server range. I suggest 192.168.3.1 for the WD My Book and 192.168.3.2 for LAN port used to connect to it. The network mask should be 255.255.255.0 (24 bits). No router that I know of uses the 192.168.3.0/24 network.

Thank you both, i try to set up static ID's for the LAN and WD My Book.

so in step 5 i need to enter the IP Address, Netmask, Gateway, and DNS Server and click Save. is this the information i get from Ipconfig (Ethernet adapter local area connection 2:?

To connect the WD My Book directly to your PC, you only need to configure an IP address and the network mask. The gateway and DNS already are defined on the other interface (probably LAN 1). Configuring 2 default gateways should not be done as it could cause routing issues.

I guess i was thinking LAN 2 (this is the port on my mother board i connect to my WD my book when i transfer files because it seems fast then when it is connected to my switch) needed a static IP address because you mention it on your first post.

So if i understand correctly, i need to set up the static IP on my WD My book only. if i connect my, My Book to LAN 2 do Netmask, Gateway, and DNS Server come from ipconfig\all LAN 2 or from LAN 1?

If you connect the WD My Book to your PC's LAN 2 port, then you need a static IP address for both and they have to be on the same network, e.g., 192.168.3.0/24 (as mentioned in an earlier post).

Try this setup:
Device IP address Mask
WD My Book 192.168.3.1 255.255.255.0
PC LAN 2 192.168.3.2 255.255.255.0

Gateway on the WD My Book could be set to 192.168.3.2, but it isn't necessary. Leave DNS server empty.

Hi again, 2quik!

Have you enabled the port forwarding on the network router for your WD My Book?
After you've set the DHCP to Static and you've configured the WD My Book with a static IP.
Hopefully you saw this link with pictures on how to perform this: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=6cPK9X
You can also try enabling the port forwarding on your router using this step-by-step: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=94Pcvt

Hope this will help you solve the LAN connection problem!
Keep us posted either way! :)

ok i set the Staic IPs like you said and after i clicked apply the page went The connection has timed out
The server at 192.168.3.1 is taking too long to respond. I can no longer see it or get access to WD book.
I put 192.168.3.1 in my browser but nothing opens up i get the same time out taking to long to respond
what am i doing wrong?

thanksSuperSoph_WD for the link.

Device IP address Mask
WD My Book
192.168.3.1
255.255.255.0

PC LAN 2 (IPv4)
192.168.3.2
255.255.255.0

I was able to get into the WD book but when i go to the settings/ networks in the WD book it indicates that i need a DNS Server...? I also can not map network drive to the WD book.

I didn't call customer service because i want to talk to someone that speaks english.
the LAn 1 DNS Servers has
fec0:0:0:ffff::1%1
fec0:0:0:ffff::2%1
fec0:0:0:ffff::3%1

When i look at LAN 1 in network connection details i get.
here is my ipconfig /all

Therefore you know the IP v4 address of your router is 192.168.0.1, your PC was assigned IP v4 address 192.168.0.2 and your network mask is 255.255.255.0. You can use any other network 192.168.0.0 network that you'd like for the WD My Book.

You haven't yet explained why you don't connect the WD My Book to a Gigabit switch as it would be as fast as connecting it to LAN 2 of your PC and an awful lot easier for someone who isn't very familiar with networking.

I had the WD book connected to my switch but i took longer to transfer files, so i connected it to motherboard LAN.
When i enter a static ID and mask for MyBook in the Mybook network settings and static ID and mask for LAN1. I can no longer access My book. The damn WD Book has been a pain since day 1.

Once you assign a static IP (not ID) address to the WD My Book, you have to connect it to your PC LAN 1 (if it's the one with the static IP address). The ipconfig /all that you provided doesn't list both LAN interfaces. How did you configure the WD My Book and the second LAN to which it has been connected? Provide IP addresses and network mask. Can you ping the WD My Book once it's connected directly to the PC?

i configured the LAN by going to Control Panel and clicking on Network and sharing center, change adapter settings, right clicked on "Local Area Connection", selected Internet protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv6) from there i entered the static IP and submask You mentioned. For My Book i went into the Mybook dashboard, settings, network, clicked on static ID and entered the static ID as you mentioned.

I can ping My Book when it is on the switch. see below...

Should i first apply the static ID when it's connected my switch? or when it is connected to the LAN1?

i thought Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2: is LAN2 and

ok after i post above. I went into the i went into the Mybook dashboard, settings, network, clicked on static ID and entered the static ID and the DNS server 8.8.8.8 as you mentioned. then i entered the static IP and submask You mentioned and entered DNS server 8.8.8.8 and you mentioned. then i disconected My Book from the switch and plugged it into LAN 1 and it found Mybook, i was able to ping to it.

mybook ping..

I think my problem was i had Mybook connected to LAN1 while i changed My Book IP, mask and LAN1 IP,mask.
After resetting mybook and connecting it to my switch, then configure Mybook ip, mask and channing LAN1 IP, Mask. Then plugging it to LAN1 I was able to connect and Ping to Mybook 192.168.3.1, was my problem?

I was able to ipconfig /all
