I've read a lot of threads about gaming builds and am a former (returning) gamer myself. I graduated high school and basically stopped gaming after that. Would like to start again but the tech has changed quite a bit since then so I don't know what to do.

I am in need of a gaming desktop that can play Planetside 2 on medium-high settings with ~30FPS in a huge fight (anyone familiar with the game will know what I am talking about) I would prefer quad core because planetside was very CPU intensive and I can imagine PS2 is as well.

My list:

I need the entire PC: from the case to the OS.

Windows 7 or xp (not 8)
Quad core (unless you can advise me a reason why a dual core would be just as good for my purposes)

Good graphics (ps2 is not very graphics intensive but I would like it to look nice nonetheless)

$500 budget

Anything else you can recommend, I'm a noob ATM, looking to learn.

For anyone not well read on PS2, I have heard that Intel is better than amd for this game.

Again please advise me from a to z on what is required in building your own PC, what guides and resources would be useful to me. Etc

My budget is $500 including tax and everything, I may be able to go over a bit if there is a good reason.

For the money, this is the best build. You should save up because limiting to 500$ can sometimes be a challenge.

I do not think you can use your laptop as a monitor. You are not going to achieve what you are looking for, with that budget. This is about the best, that I can do, without sacrificing a lot. You might have to look at used hardware.
