Does a motherboard have anything to do with the performance of the graphics card?

Okay, so as I have mentioned in other threats, I have a GTX 780, which does not perform as well as its supposed to.
But anyway - I was wondering, and this might be a stupid question, I know, if the motherboard it self has any influence on how well the card performs?
Beucase I'm about to buy a MSI GTX 970 4GB - But that would just be stupid if it's the motherboard I should upgrade. I know which motherboard to buy, if that's the case.

Thank you.

The difference between the 780 & 970 is not significant. The 970 is better but not enough to justify an upgrade from the 780. My 780 with an OC is capable of 60 fps at high/ultra at 1080p in all the games I play and the benchmarks support that. The only games that dont seem to run at 60fps are those badly coded for PC where all high systems struggle.

Admirable
if you have a gtx 780, don't bother getting a 970, as they are basically the same cards, yet the 970 is maxwell, and is more power efficient. if you buy a 970, you wont see that much of a performance boost.

anyway, for your question, the motherboard does not effect the GPU performance.

I have been trying to figure out what the hell is going on with my card, and I really can't find an answer.
I don't understand the thing with the two cards, aren't the 970 4gb better than the 780?!

I was planning on running SLI, which was why the motherboard upgrade could be amazing, if the graphics card performance would improve by getting a new one.
