how to determine if optical drive is faulty

windows 8, Dell inspiron 3721 64 bit, new reinstall. everything seems to work except or writing to disks. reads blank disk as 0 space available.

Have you tried more than 1 blank disk?

edit* delete the drive in device manager and reboot see if that helps (windows will re detect the drive so dont worry)
