Hey guys,
I have a rather strange problem. What happens is my PC boots perfectly, but then after a while, rather randomly, it will crash. No error, nothing. Then it'll post, but won't display anything. I know it continues working, as i can it produces the windows login chime.

So i thought maybe my graphics card(AMD HD6850) is failing. I should probably mention that it's fan broke a while back and I stuck on a CPU fan using glue and it's been working pretty well ever since.
I booted into Ubuntu, no problems whatsoever there. Ran some gpu stress tests(Furmark), no crashes. Temps remained around 72 C. I really can't figure out if this is a hardware problem triggered by windows or is some kind of a driver problem. Windows remains stable without the GPU(i have a integrated gpu), and is stable with the gpu without the amd drivers, ie running with the the microsoft drivers at a low resolution. Any ideas on how i can go about fixing it? Replacing the GPU isn't an option. :/

First of all you should not use a CPU cooling on gpu both are designed for a specific use and cannot be used in place of one another. They both draw different power from the psu/mobo so this might be causing issues with your display when you use high res display I mean the actual gpu might not be getting enough power.
Update to the latest gpu drivers and also do check if your RAM is working properly by using only one RAM stick/module at a time if you use dual stick or replace it with some other stick if you use single stick and do get a proper gpu fan if possible also to mention that driver conflicts unfortunately do cause such problems

I know, that's why i hardwired the fan to the psu to test and still the same thing happened.
The funny thing is it works perfectly on linux. I tried all sorts of benchmarking/stress testing software, including furmark, memtest, etc and they all work fine on linux.
On windows it'll either crash before i even get to the desktop, or crash randomly while running.
I try running stress tests in safe mode. That should identify is this is a hardware or software problem right?

If possible try your gpu on some other windows system if same thing happens that'll isolate your problem. From my personal experience stress tests are sometimes inconclusive so its better to do some swapping of hardware to see if problem persists or is solved. Faulty hardware can in rare cases can pass stress test giving much headache. At this stage it is difficult to exactly identify your issue and whether it's with software/driver or hardware
