Upgrading gpu for gaming sli

I currently have a well built pc with intel i7 4790k..16 gb ram and nvidia gtx 980.I want to know whether it would be good if i sli it with another gtx 980.What are the benefits of sli?
Will this give me 2x the power of gtx 980 or its just waste of money..
I play games on 27" monitor and i m happy with it..Is upgrading a good idea?

Then totally not worth it in any way. One gtx 980 is overkill for 1080p never mind two. It would probably run worse in sli due to incompatibility and poor sli scaling in some games in applications.
