Extending Wireless Network via 2nd Router

Hi,

Want to extend the wireless signal where I live and decided to use a second router to do this. A few things should be pointed out before I begin:

- The house I live in is rented accommodation and the owner lives in an apartment underneath.
- He provides me with access to his router wirelessly although the signal upstairs in my house is poor.
- There are also wired points within the house that allow me to connect my laptop to them giving me wired access. This works for my laptop (Dell XPS) but weirdly does not give my flatmate access at all (Lenovo Thinkpad)....

The reasons I want a wireless connection are threefold:

1. I want to be able to use my phone/tablet etc. in other parts of the house.
2. I want to be also able to use my chromecast.
3. I want my flatmate to be able to connect to the signal.

My solution was to buy a NETGEAR WNR2200 router and connect it to the wired point in the wall with the expectation that the LAN would allow me to boost the signal with the new router. This however has not been the case, instead I can connect to the new router but it has no internet connectivity. I have gone to the router IP address to try to set-up the connection but it cannot gain access to the net.

I would prefer no to bother my landlord with the issue unless I am a) sure its an issue on his end and b) something I can fix with little interference.

Can anyone think of reasons that the above workaround hasn't worked?

Any ideas and thoughts much appreciated.

PS Also any ideas why my friends laptop cannot connect to the LAN using the wired point?

in the router set up change it from a router to an ap point. plug the lan cable into the wan port of your router not one of the 4 reg port. also turn of dhcp the dhcp should be set from the other router. on your router/ap you may have to give it a fixed ip. (192.168.1.xxx) so it on the same network as the home router.

Hi,

I have managed to turn off dhcp.
I cannot change the ip address as its says there is a conflict with the WAN subnet.
I couldn't find a way to change it from "Router" to "Access Point"
The LAN cable is plugged into the "Internet" point on the router

The router still says no Ethernet cable is attached.
