I need to reinstall windows, but it asks for the disc when trying to reinstall because of missing files. I have the original disc and key but my optical drive does not work.

Is it possible for me to create the installation media here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media ,put it on a flashdrive, and use that instead of the disc? How would I go about that because I have a feeling I would need to reinstall using a different method without the disc and using a flashdrive.

You can format a empty USB memory stick to NTFS and just copy all the files from the install DVD to the USB and it should be bootable. Then just set the system to boot from the USB, it works the same as if you booted from the DVD.
