I just decided to fix up all the spare PCs I have. Ive been working on my Dell Inspiron 600m. I started by replacing the screen hinges and doing a fresh install of Windows XP SP2. The install was successful. And it is now operational again.

However I am having problems now working out all the bugs. I cannot seem to connect to the internet.

I have downloaded and installed the Intel pro/Wireless driver from Dell.com found on the page in the following link. (the service tag can be seen in the link below.)

http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/servicetag/7ndq571/drivers?DCP=DndTag&s=BSD

I installed both 155386 and 85950, after doing so the system now sees wireless internet. But when I try to set up a connection with my wireless it goes to the end and says configuration failed. Another sign of a problem is the computer won't pick up internet with an ethernet cable attached.

There are no drivers for non-wireless networking available. And there are no chipset or system drivers besides the BIOs one which I believe I already installed. The only thing I really didnt install are the modem drivers as I was under the impression that they where for dial-up telephone cord connections. I did however install one of them. Would it be a good idea to go ahead and install the rest of them?

Anyone have any advice for me here?

All answers will be much appreciated, whether it helps me get this solved or not.

Look at the network adapters, make sure they are listed normally without any ? or ! symbols. Are there link lights on the network card? Did you try a different cable and port on the router/switch? You should try an upgrade to SP3 from 2, then re-install the drivers again. You can get an offline stup for SP3 and just load it from a CD or extrnal hard drive.

Unfortunately I have already been there and it doesn't seem to be addressing my problem. The only thing I am thinking now is that the computer needs modem drivers and they some how double as ethernet controllers and be the route of my problem. Although it seems like they are set up for dial up connections. Im going to try that in a minute and see what happens. I do have another hard drive from another computer that seems to be working, I might poke around with that one and see if I can figure out what is different.

Something is causing the computer to not pick up connected plugs. Im not sure if its just software or maybe hardware aswell. I downloaded all the drivers even the others no suggested by typing in the service tag. Some of the broadcom drivers allowed my computer to have a internet icon pop up on the bottom right taskbar screen next to the clock. But it says not connected. I try to troubleshoot it and it comes back with no ethernet cable connected, its necessary for the trouble shoot.

installing all of the modem drivers didn't solve the problem. I did also install the Dell Notebook System Software. Nothing. Maybe its the way my drivers are installed or rather the order they where installed in.

I still cant figure this one out.

Not sure what you mean by unknown or errored out. There is nothing popping up in front of my face but I dont really know where to go to check that. Even trying to establish a LAN connection is no good. It says NETWORK CABLE IS UNPLUGGED. Even if it isn't.

Device Manager goes as follows

If you don't search for the drivers that only apply to that service tag there are a lot more. Is it possible I need one of the drivers from the full menu. Or is something missing from the list of aplicable drivers. I do not see any chipset drivers or anything system related when showing the related drivers by via.

I ended up figuring it out. When I disable the intel pro set / wireless network program and it reverts back to letting windows take control of the web for some reason it become able to connect. Im not really sure why this worked but it seems to be consistent if the pro set is activated it won't connect to the web.

Also I tried to install service pack 3 by just copying a file onto the desktop and running it from there. But it ended up not taking on the 600m. It worked on my XPS 400 desktop, im pretty sure you need SP3 to connect to windows update and such. But maybe im wrong. Anyway I will attempt it again now that everything is working.

I appreciate all the help guys! And hopefully this info helps someone else.
