i7-2600k... any processor be an upgrade without changing mobo?

Solution
The i7 3770k is something like 10% better than your cpu, i wouldn't spend $270 for that kind of upgrade. You cpu is fine, capable of running pretty much anything, why do you want to upgrade?

You're looking at socket 1155 processors, so Ivy Bridge is the last generation you could use, if the board supports it.

Is this your motherboard: http://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboards/MAXIMUS_V_FORMULATHUNDERFX/ ? If so, this is the list of supported CPUs: http://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboards/MAXIMUS_V_FORMULATHUNDERFX/HelpDesk_CPU/

You could put an i7-3770K in it, which might net you a 10% performance gain.

If you overclock your i7 2600k to 4.5ghz there is no "real" upgrade available. The 2600k would even be on even keel with the newer devil's canyon i7 cpu's, clocked a tiny bit lower. I would say a 2600k at 4.5ghz is aboult the same as an i7 4790k at 4.2ghz if I were to guess. Intel really hasn't made any huge leaps in the last few generations.
