Problem with display/driver

I've been trying to troubleshoot this problem for the past few hours and I still haven't managed to figure out how to fix the issue. I'm kind of at the end of my rope and I really need my desktop functional for work. Any and all help would be extremely appreciated.

In a nutshell, my problem is this:
My computer won't start up outside of safe mode. Initially it would try starting up, flash a blue screen with a wall of text that I couldn't fully read because it only appeared for a moment or two (I did catch something about the display though), before powering down and trying to start up again. It would endlessly repeat the process. I've been trying to troubleshoot it and now I can get it to start up fully outside of safe mode, but only if my display adapter is uninstalled/is the default windows one. On top of that, only one of my monitors will display.

I had been playing a game earlier when my screens blacked out, came back up and froze, and then displayed weird pixellation. I shut my computer down and then started it back up, but it would only cycle through restart, blue screen, shutdown, repeat like I mentioned above. Further more, my 'main' monitor (connected with an hdmi cable) stopped displaying (even though the power light is on and everything) and my 'side' monitor (which uses a dvi) started displaying everything instead.

I tried a system restore, but had the same problem. I tried booting it up in safe mode, which worked. I uninstalled my display adapter, restarted my computer normally, and everything worked (except for my 'main' monitor). I used a driver sweep (as recommended) in safe mode to clean up any traces of the old driver before installing my display driver and restarting. My computer starts up, but once it gets past the initial Windows flowing flag loading screen, it goes black, but not off. I've also tried updating my monitor drivers, which didn't change anything.

I'm assuming the problem is with my GPU (nvidia gtx 470) but I'm not sure what to do about it. I got the computer from a friend's friend for work and casual games and such and haven't had issues like this with it before. I'm not the most computer literate person, so I'm pretty stumped as to what to do from here.

I believe you have a hardware issue with your video card. The reason Windows only boots successfully in to Safe Mode is because it's not trying to use any of the GPU features that the full driver would use. You should get a new card and swap it out. A relatively cheap card should beat out the 470 anyway. Check Tom's Graphics Card Hierarchy chart to see what may be within your budget and also an upgrade!

Thank you both for your prompt responses!

I followed your advice, sincreator, and retried DDU+reinstall and everything seemed to be working smoothly. I got to my desktop, but after a few minutes a 'monitor going to sleep' message popped up and my computer shut down/restarted. On the restart, it got up until the 'loading windows' flag before the display went black again.

I've also started looking into a new card, as my current one is kind of on the old side.

Have you a budget in mind? It is looking like there is an issue hardware wise, although it may be related to the power supply as well. What power supply do you have? Can you try another just to check?

That's unfortunate. My power supply is a xion xon-700p12n, and I'm afraid I don't have another around. As for my budget, I'm currently in school so funds are a bit tight. I would say I could afford up to $200 or so.

Here is a review of your power supply. It gets a 5.5 out of 10, and I recommend replacing it ASAP even if it isn't the power supply causing your issues. http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story4&reid=109

Can you list your computers full specs? You may not need to expensive of a power supply to get back up running again. At least if it does end up being your graphics card you will have a decent power supply to run it when you make the purchase.
