Hi,

Sorry for what might be considered a stupid question but I'm a novice when it comes to power supplies, my work recently purchased a GTX 980 Gigabyte G1 gaming card, and I'm about to put it into our PC to try it out.

When I opened up the PC and removed our current GPU I found our PSU provides 2x 6 pin connectors, and the GTX 980 requires 2x 8 pin connectors. First thought was "ah heck", but then I looked at the cables Gigabyte had provided, and the 8 pin connector they gave me was only actually using 6 pins, 2 are empty, lacing any wires going into it, and no pin in the connector itself. So this means that even with the 8 pin connectors, I would be providing 6 pins worth of power?

My main concern is the layout.

On the cables they provided the pins look like

OOXO
OXOO

With X being the missing pin, and if I were to plug in my 6 pin connector directly, it would be:

XOOO
XOOO

I worried this might cause some damage to the card so I decided not to try it.

So my question is, do I need a bigger PSU for this? Would the card even work with 2x 6 pin connectors?

Thanks for any assistance.

Please mention your PSU, the refernce 980 has 2x6pin connectors, but the Gigabyte model has 2x8pin. So either you'll need a new psu (if its less then 600W) or get power connectors which convert 6 to 8pin. But you should have gotten molex 8pin power connectors, check your Box.
