I have a Acer S3 laptop, It has a 320GB HD with a 20GB SSD from the factory.
I wiped everything and put linux on the SSD and now I cant reinstall windows.

Before I did all this, I made a "backup image" of the harddrive which took 10 DVD's.
I use the ubuntu disk to wipe everything back to ntfs, and when I use the "backup disks" that I made of windows 8, it failes everytime at 61% says "input/output error.

any ideas? Is there any way for me to get the windows 8 key that is assigned to my laptop? ive called windows, and acer and they tell me i have to buy one. Even though i know that there is a specific key for my laptop, i've looked in all the documents that are in the box, theres no key on the laptop itself, like they used to do

The problem with Windows and Linux have a name, MBR. The MBR is the boot of Windows and It doesnt detect Linux, this is why everybody recomend to install Linux before Windows. But, you can install Windows and recover the GRUB (boot of Linux) which detect both OS.

Also, you can download a iso image from windows and use your key to activate it.

Well, you have already pay for Windows... so <piracy talk removed by moderator>

@Andromendous, the license key for Windows 8 is encrypted and embedded in the motherboard firmware. If you wish to reinstall the factory supplied version of Windows you will need either the recovery media that you created first thing after taking the laptop out of the box, or purchase recovery disc/s from the laptop manufacturer. None of the .iso images that you can download (legally) will work with the embedded key.
