Hello, this is my first post and I apologize if this is in the wrong section.

I'm heading to a localish micromicrocenter to pick up an AMD cpu/mobo bundle and I am unable to decided between two of them:
Bundle #1 fx6300 and gigabyte ga -78lmt-usb3 for $90

Bundle #2 fx8320 and asrock 970 extreme3 r2.0 for $145

I plan on using this build for gaming and basic school work

Would the improved performance and "future proof" of the extra 2 cores be worth the extra $55?

Solution
First, the price difference isn't $55 according to MC's website.
FX-6300 = $89.99
FX-8320 = $119.99
($30 difference)
Gigabyte GA-78MLT-USB3 = $54.99
ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0 = 79.99
($15 difference)

Total difference in price is $45, not $55.

After applying the $40 CPU + mobo combo savings, costs are:
6300 + Gigabyte = $114.98 + tax.
8320 + ASRock = $159.98 + tax.

Sorry to have to correct you, but the prices you provided are all incorrect. That is, unless you actually selected refurbished motherboards instead of new ones that are available at your local MicroCenter store and/or had already applied the value of the potential rebates.

As for CPU selection, I'd actually select an FX-8320E CPU. It's the same price as the 8320 ($119.99)...

The 6300 bundle is a micro-ATX board, the 8320 bundle is a full ATX board.

The ASROCK board has much better memory support. It has more fan plugs. It has slots for dual graphics cards.

The Gigabyte has onboard video (REAL LOW END) but would be enough to boot and build.

Both have USB 3.0 in back

I would get the ASROCK because of the better motherboard ($30 difference in price on NewEgg), so you are paying $25 for the extra cores.

As for CPU selection, I'd actually select an FX-8320E CPU. It's the same price as the 8320 ($119.99) with the same TDP as the 6300, and it's still typically capable of overclocking as well as all the other FX-series CPUs. Also, the $40 AMD motherboard/CPU combo discount will still apply even though the FX-8320E CPU doesn't appear on the AMD Motherboard Bundle page.

For a motherboard, I'd go with the ASRock over the Gigabyte unless you specifically have a Micro-ATX chassis (case). If you have a full-size ATX, I'd actually prefer the $89.99 ASUS M5A97 R2.0 (not the LE model) over the ASRock 970 Extreme3.

Thank you for the response
I will probably be picking up then 8320e if it ends up being the same price as the 8320.
As for the price differences, I called the local microcenter about the pricing and they did confirm that the 8320/Asrock bundle should be $145 even if it doesn't appear that way when someone is on the website
