For Christmas I got a new PSU and was told by someone here that to use it with my Dell Optiplex 980 I would need to buy an adapter and rewire it to work properly due to the MOBO's proprietary connector. (Link to the forum he/she provided: http://) However, after inspecting the PSU again I have found that it's MOBO connector has 24 pin's, while the end of the adapter it would plug into only has 20 (this being bought from a link in the form in the above link I have provided) will this affect its prformance? In case it is relevant, the PSU is a Thermaltake Smart 650W.

Hello... You will need to check the Color of the wires, and their position, between the OLD and New PS 24/20 pin connector. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_supply_unit_%28computer%29 " Wiring diagrams "
It is Common for it to be a 20-Pin connector... there will be another 4-pin connector that will inter-lock on the 20- pin connector for 24 pin MB connections. See the picture on the right, next to the " Wiring diagrams " color coded connector information.
