Hi. Recently I had problems with my laptop's hard drive so I had it changed. I got it back and it was reset to factory settings, which I didn't have a problem with, but after I finished setting it up, I noticed I was unable to scroll up/down. The mouse works fine. I checked Device Manager and I noticed it just said PS/2 Compatible Mouse. I downloaded the mouse drivers from the manufacture's website (Gateway). They provide both an Elan and Synaptic's driver. Before I had my laptop reset, it had used Synaptic.
- Installed the Synaptic driver, still wouldn't let me scroll
- Checked Settings/Properties under Synaptic; no scrolling options
- Uninstalled Synaptic and re-installed newer version from it's actual site
- Same problem
- Installed the Elan driver from Gateway, finally able to scroll but it's not inverted like how it was before. Most of the one/two finger gestures don't work.
The laptop is a Gateway NV52L23U and isn't under warranty anymore.
I know I can live without having the mouse gestures or having the inverted scrolling, but I'd like to find out the problem. Please and Thanks

You shouldn't ever need to download mouse drivers unless you have a specialised gaming mouse.

After getting a new drive I always recommend a clean Windows installation to make sure everything runs smooth. Currently you are probably experiencing corrupt drivers and/or windows image.

So should I do the " Remove everything and Reinstall Windows" that's built in Windows 8?

You can do. Just make sure to backup all your data before as you will loose everything off the PC.

If you can though, I would do a manual clean install by installing from a disk or USB drive and then wiping the old Windows installation and reinstalling onto the drive.

I tried doing the Windows 8 Feature, but I get an error saying "Insert Media Some files are missing. Your Windows installation or recovery media will provide these files."
I don't have a disk or a USB drive that has the Windows installation. What should I do next?

Edit: So I found out how to create an installation media on a USB Drive. Currently updating to Windows 8.1 to create the installation media. As soon as I update, I'll start creating the file.

I think OP is talking about the laptop's touchpad, not a mouse.
The touchpad DOES need a driver software to make advanced features like pinch-to-zoom and two-finger scrolling, i have two laptops and these features are disabled in both unless i install the Synaptics driver.

Yeah sorry I didn't make it known. I have an Acer laptop as well and works perfect with it's Synaptics Driver. With the Elan driver, I didn't have all the advanced features that I did have with Synaptics. I can't get support from the Gateway because it seems they only provide support for laptops that are still under warranty.

If it's a Synaptics touchpad, you should install the Synaptics driver.
Uninstall the Elan driver and install the latest Synaptics driver again, we'll need to figure out a way to get it working, using the driver of another hardware is hardly a solution, it's a workaround.
Once you install the Synaptics driver, don't you get this
